IAFF Local 18 is the union representing 880 fire fighters in Vancouver, BC. The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) has been advocating for fire fighter rights and safety worldwide for a century. We proudly stand for our members and work with IAFF and IAFF Canada on issues impacting fire fighters across North America.

🌍🇨🇦 Kicking Off Veterans Week: Honoring the Canadian Corps of (Civilian) Firefighters in WWII 🔥

As we begin Veterans Week, we remember the bravery of the Canadian Corps of (Civilian) Firefighters, whose mission began with a proposal by UBC Fire Chief O.L. Lister in 1940. His idea became reality in 1942, when over 400 Canadians deployed to Britain to combat relentless fires caused by German bombings.

Working alongside the British National Fire Service, these courageous firefighters served in highly targeted cities, risking their lives to protect communities and critical infrastructure. Their legacy reminds us of the immense bravery shown in times of need.

This week, we also thank our current and former Canadian Armed Forces members for their dedicated service. Your sacrifices uphold the legacy of those who came before you.

This is the damage done by an improperly discared cigarette.

Fire investigators have determined that the Oct. 7 fire in Strathcona that displaced 11 people and destroyed three homes was caused as result of a carelessly discarded cigarette at the rear of the property.

59% of fires in Vancouver in 2023 were caused by smoker materials.

Another reminder to our friends who smoke: Never dispose of lit cigarettes improperly. Make sure they are completely extinguished.
